Organic Spirulina Powder

Organic Spirulina Powder is made from blue-green, freshwater algae. The algae is a unicellular freshwater blue-green algae that was once a valuable source of food for the Aztecs and Mesoamericans. In recent years it has become a sought-after addition to the Western diet. Nowadays it is cultivated all over the world. It thrives best in a comfortable climate of approximately 30 °C and a pH level of around 8.5.
Both NASA and the European Space Agency have proposed that spirulina can be cultivated as a primary source of food during long-term space missions.

Spirulina is the one food that truly deserves the title ‘’Superfood”, this is because it has the most concentrated amounts of protein of all foods, this is around 67% to 71%.

What is Spirulina Powder?

Although spirulina has a blue-green colour, it is not a herb, plant or algae. Spirulina is actually an organism which belongs to the cyanobacteria family. Spirulina grows on warm lakes and rivers, spirulina forms a green mat on the surface of the water.

Spirulina is a simple life form which produces its own energy by photosynthesis. It is believed that this ‘’algae’’ helped the world’s atmosphere change from carbon dioxide to oxygen which allows other forms of life to exist. The commercial production of spirulina was first initiated by a French company in the 1970s and then Japan and USA followed. When people started to be more aware of spirulina they started to look more closely to this ‘’algae’’ and found out that it contains an amazing amount of nutrients.

Is your Spirulina organic certified?

Yes! We are certified by SKAL and the Spirulina we use for our Spirulina Powder comes from China. There is no need to use any pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other harmful chemicals since they are grown in naturally fertile soils, we do not need to use any artificial fertilizers on it. Our Spirulina is organically certified by SKAL Biocontrol and is, therefore, EU organic certified.

How is your Spirulina made?

Our spirulina is cultivated on a peninsula in China. Which is far from urbanized areas, because this can pollute the water. Out farm location gets long hours of sunshine and it has consistent warm temperatures. These factors are very important for growing spirulina and to achieve the best quality. The Spirulina is harvested for the first time after two months of continuous growth. The harvesting begins with removing the spirulina from the waters with a fine screen mesh. The spirulina is then sieved before it is transferred to a pond where the spirulina is washed and picked by hand. With this method, we make sure that only pure spirulina is used. After cleaning the spirulina will then be transferred to a drying chamber to remove its moisture in a way which retains the nutritional value of the spirulina. After the drying process, the spirulina is milled into the spirulina powder.
