What are Flax Seeds?
The Flax seeds grow on the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). These flax seeds have a nutty flavour and an earthy aroma. The seeds have a hard covering, are small and have can have a brown, yellow or golden colour. The flax plant is a plant which has been growing for thousands of years. The seeds were found in caves dating from 30,000 years ago. Experts also found flax seeds in dwellings from the Stone Age. This seed was also found in ancient Egypt where it was used as food and linen. When civilization started to spread flax seeds did too. All over the world people were making linen with flax. The commercial production of flax fibre started in the 1700s till the 1800s. Nowadays, the biggest producers of flax are Poland, Soviet Union and France.
