Organic Carob Powder
Organic Carob powder is derived from the pulses of the Carob tree. The Carob tree grows widely in the Mediterranean area, but is also cultivated worldwide. It consists of two main components, pulp (90%) and seed (10%). The pulp is composed of about 50% natural sugars such as sucrose, glucose, maltose, fructose and polysaccharides.
It has the same taste, the same appearance and the same use as Cacao, but it is something different.. that is what Carob is. However, this superfood is more than just something similar as cacao. It is a natural, certified organic sweetener which gives your drinks and sweet treats an extra dimension.
What is Carob?
Being a member of the pea family, carob grows in a dry environment and on slow-growing trees in Italy. On these trees you will find long, leathery and reddish-brown pods which contain tiny seeds. With the seeds having a consistent size and weight, they are actually being used by jewellers. To measure diamonds and gold, known as ‘carat’. Carat is derived from the arabic name ‘Carob Seeds’.
Is your Carob organic certified?
Yes! We are certified by SKAL and the Carob we use for our carob powder comes from Italy. There is no need to use any pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other harmful chemicals since they are harvested from organic fields in Italy. Our Carob powder is organically certified by SKAL Biocontrole and is therefore EU organic certified.
How is your carob made?
Our farmers use the raw carob to make our high quality carob powder. As said the trees are on a chemical-free soil, to save the quality. The process of our carob powder is as follow:
- As soon as the Carob pods have turned brown, the harvesting begins;
- The pods are gently picked and are being cracked open with extra care;
- Removal of seeds;
- Drying of the pods;
- Washing and processing;
- Grinding into fine powder.
