The taste is so distinctive that it is used in Brazil as a flavoring for soft drinks. The main ingredient of guarana is guaranine. Chemically, this occurs in the vicinity of caffeine. Organic guarana powder is therefore mainly used for this reason. Besides caffeine, guarana it can contain other compounds of the xanthine family, like theobromine and theophylline for example. What is guarana?
Guarana is a plant which belongs to the maple family. It is a climber plant that grows leathery brown and sometimes red fruits called guara-ná which means ‘’fruits like the eyes of people’’. When the fruit is ripe it opens up revealing a black seed that is surrounded by white flesh, the same as an eyeball. Therefore its name. The Guarana is almost the same size as a coffee bean. Guarana can contain a relatively high amount of caffeine, even higher than coffee.
How is your Guarana powder made?
The Guarana plants grow on plantations located in Brazil. The harvesting process happens once a year and only if the fruits of the Guarana plants are fully mature. If only a few of the fruits have matured, the fruits are picked individually by hand. If a lot of the fruits are ripe, the stem of the trees are manually broken or cut with scissors. When harvested, the fruits are soaked in water so that the skin can easily be removed. After all the fruits are peeled, the seeds are dried by the sun, this is done before they go to the oven where they get dehydrated at 40 degrees. Around this temperature, the seeds will lose moisture, but will keep their nutrients and flavor. The then dried seeds will then be processed into a fine powder, which then is 100% pure Guarana powder.
